vasudānasya bhallena śiraḥ kāyād apāharat ||
punaḥ pañcaśatān matsyān ṣaṭsahasrāṃś ca sṛñjayān ||
hastinām ayutaṃ hatvā jaghānāśvāyutaṃ punaḥ ||
...scattered upon the earth like trees felled by the wind. And with falling elephants and streams of horses, O Bharata, the earth became impassable, a mire of flesh and blood. Having slain twenty thousand chariot-ranks of the Panchalas, Drona stood in the battle like a smokeless blazing fire. And again, the mighty Bharadvaja, enraged, severed Vasudana's head from his body with a broad-headed arrow; again he slew five hundred Matsyas and six thousand Srinjayas.

Drona stands over the field "like a smokeless fire," having destroyed multitudes of warriors: one teacher lays waste to whole armies. It is telling that the image of the smokeless flame recurs -- pure, steady, all-consuming. The verse teaches that power given to an unjust cause is the more terrible the more perfect it is; and Drona, radiant and formidable as a pure flame, turns his light to destruction -- the tragedy of greatness in the service of ruin.
