तस्याश्वान् रथशक्त्यासौ तदा क्रुद्धः पराक्रमी ॥
सर्वान् एकैकशो द्रोणः कपोताभान् अजीघनत् ॥
ते हता न्यपतन् भूमौ धृष्टद्युम्नस्य वाजिनः ॥
शोणाश् च पर्यमुच्यन्त रथबन्धाद् विशां पते ॥
तान् हयान् निहतान् दृष्ट्वा द्विजाग्र्येण स पार्षतः ॥
नामृष्यत युधां श्रेष्ठो याज्ञसेनिर् महारथः ॥
विरथः स गृहीत्वा तु खड्गं खड्गभृतां वरः ॥
द्रोणम् अभ्यपतद् राजन् वैनतेय इवोरगम् ॥
tasyāśvān rathaśaktyāsau tadā kruddhaḥ parākramī ||
sarvān ekaikaśo droṇaḥ kapotābhān ajīghanat ||
te hatā nyapatan bhūmau dhṛṣṭadyumnasya vājinaḥ ||
śoṇāś ca paryamucyanta rathabandhād viśāṃ pate ||
tān hayān nihatān dṛṣṭvā dvijāgryeṇa sa pārṣataḥ ||
nāmṛṣyata yudhāṃ śreṣṭho yājñasenir mahārathaḥ ||
virathaḥ sa gṛhītvā tu khaḍgaṃ khaḍgabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ||
droṇam abhyapatad rājan vainateya ivoragam ||
His horses, with the chariot-spear, then enraged, valiant Drona slew all one by one, dove-colored as they were. They, struck down, fell to the ground — the horses of Dhrishtadyumna; and the reddish-brown [horses] broke free from the chariot's fastening, O lord of the peoples. Seeing those horses slain by the foremost of the twice-born [Drona], he, Parshata, did not endure it, foremost among fighters, the son of Yajnasena, the great warrior. And he, without a chariot, having taken up a sword, foremost among sword-bearers, swooped upon Drona, O king, like Vainateya [Garuda] upon a serpent.

Dhrishtadyumna, stripped of his horses, with a single sword swoops upon Drona 'like Garuda upon a serpent': on foot he goes against the greatest of archers. It is telling that he is likened to Garuda — the eternal foe of serpents, their fearless destroyer. The verse teaches that one appointed to a task does not reckon with the enemy's superiority: unarmed, on foot, he rushes at the terrible one, as Garuda upon a serpent; and in this fearless resolve is the sign that he is moved by a power higher than human.
