ताम् अस्य विशिखैस् तीक्ष्णैः क्षिप्यमाणां महारथः ॥
निजघान शरैर् द्रोणः क्रुद्धः सत्यपराक्रमः ॥
तां दृष्ट्वा तु नरव्याघ्रो द्रोणेन निहतां शरैः ॥
विमलं खड्गम् आदत्त शतचन्द्रं च भानुमत् ॥
असंशयं तथाभूते पाञ्चाल्यः साध्व् अमन्यत ॥
वधम् आचार्यमुख्यस्य प्राप्तकालं महात्मनः ॥
ततः स्वरथनीडस्थः स्वरथस्य रथेषया ॥
अगच्छद् असिम् उद्यम्य शतचन्द्रं च भानुमत् ॥

vadham ācāryamukhyasya prāptakālaṃ mahātmanaḥ ||
tataḥ svarathanīḍasthaḥ svarathasya ratheṣayā ||
agacchad asim udyamya śatacandraṃ ca bhānumat ||
It [the mace], hurled by him with sharp arrows, the great warrior Drona, enraged, truly valiant, struck down with arrows. Seeing it, [the mace], struck down by Drona with arrows, the tiger among men took up a bright sword and a radiant shield of a hundred moons. Without doubt, in such a [position], the Panchala prince deemed it fitting — the timely slaying of the foremost among teachers, the great-souled one. Dhrishtadyumna, stripped of everything, goes against Drona with sword and shield along the pole of his chariot: an unyielding will moves toward its appointed task. It is telling that he 'deemed timely' — he knows the hour has come. The verse teaches that the executor of fate is driven not only by destiny but also by his own discernment of the hour; and one who perceives his appointed moment goes to meet it on foot and unarmed, if need be — for a will in accord with fate cannot be stopped.
