क्षत्रियाणाम् अभावाय दृष्ट्वा द्रोणम् अवस्थितम् ॥
ऋषयो ऽभ्यागमंस् तूर्णं हव्यवाहपुरोगमाः ॥
विश्वामित्रो जमदग्निर् भारद्वाजो ऽथ गौतमः ॥
वसिष्ठः कश्यपो ऽत्रिश् च ब्रह्मलोकं निनीषवः ॥
सिकताः पृश्नयो गर्गा बालखिल्या मरीचिपाः ॥
भृगवो ऽङ्गिरसश् चैव सूक्ष्माश् चान्ये महर्षयः ॥
त एनम् अब्रुवन् सर्वे द्रोणम् आहवशोभिनम् ॥
अधर्मतः कृतं युद्धं समयो निधनस्य ते ॥

viśvāmitro jamadagnir bhāradvājo 'tha gautamaḥ ||
vasiṣṭhaḥ kaśyapo 'triś ca brahmalokaṃ ninīṣavaḥ ||
sikatāḥ pṛśnayo gargā bālakhilyā marīcipāḥ ||
bhṛgavo 'ṅgirasaś caiva sūkṣmāś cānye maharṣayaḥ ||
ta enam abruvan sarve droṇam āhavaśobhinam ||
adharmataḥ kṛtaṃ yuddhaṃ samayo nidhanasya te ||
Having slain ten thousand elephants and again ten thousand horses, [Drona stood] for the destruction of the kshatriyas. Seeing Drona standing thus, the rishis quickly appeared, with the Fire-bearer [Agni] at their head: Vishvamitra, Jamadagni, Bharadvaja, then Gautama, Vasishtha, Kashyapa, and Atri, wishing to lead him to the world of Brahma. All of them spoke to Drona, who had shone in battle: "Unlawfully is this battle waged by you; the time of your death has come. Lay down your weapon in battle, O Drona, and come together with us, who stand before you."

The rishis and Agni themselves descend to lead Drona to the world of Brahma: heaven itself proclaims that his time is fulfilled. It is telling that they call on him to "lay down his weapon" — to end a warrior's path with dignity. The verse teaches that even the greatest is given a limit; and when the time comes, the righteous forefathers and gods themselves come for one whose span is complete — but to enter the higher world, one must set aside weapon and strife, reconciled with departure.
