Translation

Having calculated the time for delivering the semen to his queen, and having consecrated that semen with a mantra, he — knower of the subtle truth of dharma and worldly gain — spoke to the swift falcon standing nearby, having discerned that the bird was capable: 'As a service to me, carry this semen to my house; give it swiftly to Girika, for today is her fertile time.' The falcon, taking it up, swift, quickly took flight, and rising to his utmost speed, sped away, the bird. Another falcon, seeing him coming, suspecting it to be meat, at once swooped upon him. The two of them waged a battle of beaks in the sky; and while they fought, that semen fell into the waters of the Yamuna. There dwelt a beautiful apsaras named Adrika, who by Brahma's curse had taken the form of a fish and lived in the Yamuna. That Adrika, in her fish form, swiftly swallowed the semen of Vasu as it fell from the falcon's talons. One day fishermen caught that fish; and when the tenth month arrived, O best of the Bharatas, they drew from her belly two human infants — a girl and a boy. Considering it a marvel, they reported to the king: 'In the body of a fish, O king, these two humans were born.' Rajoparichara took the boy from them; he became a king named Matsya, righteous and true to his word. And that apsaras was instantly freed from her curse; for the lord [Brahma] had told her before: 'Having entered an animal's womb and given birth to two humans, O virtuous one, you shall win release from the curse.' She, having given birth to those two and having been killed by the fisherman, cast off her fish form, attained a divine one, and departed by the path of the siddhas, sages, and charanas. And the girl, daughter of that fish, born of the fish, smelling of fish, endowed with beauty and good disposition, filled with every virtue, was given by the king to the fisherman, with the words: 'Let her be yours.' That girl, named Satyavati, smelled of fish for some time from dwelling with the fisherman, though she smiled brightly.
