ततो जलविहारार्थं कारयाम् आस भारत ॥
चेलकम्बलवेश्मानि विचित्राणि महान्ति च ॥
प्रमाणकोट्याम् उद्देशं स्थलं किं चिद् उपेत्य च ॥
क्रीडावसाने सर्वे ते शुचिवस्त्राः स्वलंकृताः ॥
सर्वकामसमृद्धं तद् अन्नं बुभुजिरे शनैः ॥
दिवसान्ते परिश्रान्ता विहृत्य च कुरूद्वहाः ॥
विहारावसथेष्व् एव वीरा वासम् अरोचयन् ॥
खिन्नस् तु बलवान् भीमो व्यायामाभ्यधिकस् तदा ॥
वाहयित्वा कुमारांस् ताञ् जलक्रीडागतान् विभुः ॥
प्रमाणकोट्यां वासार्थी सुष्वापारुह्य तत् स्थलम् ॥
शीतं वासं समासाद्य श्रान्तो मदविमोहितः ॥
निश्चेष्टः पाण्डवो राजन् सुष्वाप मृतकल्पवत् ॥

khinnas tu balavān bhīmo vyāyāmābhyadhikas tadā ||
vāhayitvā kumārāṃs tāñ jalakrīḍāgatān vibhuḥ ||
pramāṇakoṭyāṃ vāsārthī suṣvāpāruhya tat sthalam ||
śītaṃ vāsaṃ samāsādya śrānto madavimohitaḥ ||
niśceṣṭaḥ pāṇḍavo rājan suṣvāpa mṛtakalpavat ||
'Then, for water sports, he had colorful and large tents of cloth and wool set up, O Bharata, at Pramanakoti, on a certain high bank. At the close of the games, all of them, in clean garments, well adorned, slowly ate that food, rich in every delicacy. At the end of the day, wearied from their sport, the scions of the Kuru line, the heroes, chose to stay overnight in those pleasure tents. But the weary, mighty Bhima, having exercised beyond measure, having ducked those boys who had come for the water games, the mighty one, at Pramanakoti, seeking rest, climbed up onto that bank and fell asleep; finding a cool spot, weary, overcome with drowsiness, motionless, the Pandava, O king, slept as though dead.'

Here the first attempt on Bhima's life is being prepared: Duryodhana's lavish games are only bait. Telling is the treachery: under the guise of a merry feast and games, murder is plotted. Here the familiar mask of evil is visible -- it dresses itself in friendliness and gaiety to lull vigilance to sleep. Telling, too, is Bhima's defenseless state: exhausted, he sleeps "as though dead" -- and in this helplessness of the mightiest an opening appears for the treacherous. So the scripture shows how vulnerable even the mighty can be in a moment of trusting unguardedness; but, as what follows will show, a higher protection is extended over the righteous, and the wicked design will not reach its goal.
