अन्योन्यं तौ समासाद्य विचकर्षतुर् ओजसा ॥
राक्षसो भीमसेनश् च विक्रमं चक्रतुः परम् ॥
बभञ्जतुर् महावृक्षांल् लताश् चाकर्षतुस् ततः ॥
मत्ताव् इव सुसंरब्धौ वारणौ षष्टिहायनौ ॥
तयोः शब्देन महता विबुद्धास् ते नरर्षभाः ॥
सह मात्रा तु ददृशुर् हिडिम्बाम् अग्रतः स्थिताम् ॥
anyonyaṃ tau samāsādya vicakarṣatur ojasā ||
rākṣaso bhīmasenaś ca vikramaṃ cakratuḥ param ||
babhañjatur mahāvṛkṣāṃl latāś cākarṣatus tataḥ ||
mattāv iva susaṃrabdhau vāraṇau ṣaṣṭihāyanau ||
tayoḥ śabdena mahatā vibuddhās te nararṣabhāḥ ||
saha mātrā tu dadṛśur hiḍimbām agrataḥ sthitām ||
"Having come together, the two dragged each other with force, the rakshasa and Bhimasena displaying the highest prowess; they broke great trees and tore up vines, like two enraged, furious elephants of sixty years. At their great noise those bulls among men awoke, and together with their mother saw Hidimba standing before them."

Here the battle reaches its full pitch — and wakes the sleepers. Telling is the comparison to giant elephants: the clash is so terrible that it shakes the forest itself, breaking trees and tearing away vines; forces seemingly equal in might have met. Telling too is what the verse ends with: the awakened Pandavas see, before anything else, Hidimba standing before them — she who did not flee, but remained beside her beloved and his kin. Herein lies her faithfulness: transformed by love, she does not abandon the righteous in the hour of danger. Thus scripture shows two fruits of the night — Bhima's terrible battle and Hidimba's quiet devotion; and the awakened family finds in her not an enemy, but a protectress.
