Thus admonished, Partha set forth, surrounded by a great army, on the wondrous, miracle-working chariot given by Agni. Likewise Bhimasena, and the twins, bulls among men, set forth with their armies — all honored by Dharmaraja. The quarter dear to the lord of wealth [north] was conquered by the son of Pakashasana [Arjuna], the eastern by Bhimasena, the southern by Sahadeva, and the western was conquered by Nakula, the knower of weapons, O king; while Dharmaraja Yudhishthira himself remained at Khandavaprastha.

The four brothers set out toward the four quarters, while the eldest remains the center — an image of a kingdom where diverse powers are directed toward a single head. It is notable that all conquer, yet "honored by Dharmaraja": even conquest issues from a single source of dharma and returns to it. Thus the order of righteous rule shows itself: the labors of many converge in one, and what is won is not each man's spoil but an offering to the whole. The verse teaches that concord, subordinated to dharma, embraces every quarter of the world.
