गृहीत्वा तु बलं सारं फल्गु चोत्सृज्य पाण्डवः ॥
दरदान् सह काम्बोजैर् अजयत् पाकशासनिः ॥
प्रागुत्तरां दिशं ये च वसन्त्य् आश्रित्य दस्यवः ॥
निवसन्ति वने ये च तान् सर्वान् अजयत् प्रभुः ॥
लोहान् परमकाम्बोजान् ऋषिकान् उत्तरान् अपि ॥
सहितांस् तान् महाराज व्यजयत् पाकशासनिः ॥
gṛhītvā tu balaṃ sāraṃ phalgu cotsṛjya pāṇḍavaḥ ||
daradān saha kāmbojair ajayat pākaśāsaniḥ ||
prāguttarāṃ diśaṃ ye ca vasanty āśritya dasyavaḥ ||
nivasanti vane ye ca tān sarvān ajayat prabhuḥ ||
lohān paramakāmbojān ṛṣikān uttarān api ||
sahitāṃs tān mahārāja vyajayat pākaśāsaniḥ ||
Having taken the strong part of his army and released the weak, the Pandava, son of Pakashasana, conquered the Daradas together with the Kambojas. And the bandits who dwell clinging to the northeastern direction, and those who live in the forest — all of them the lord conquered. The Lohas, the Paramakambojas, and the northern Rishikas also, gathered together, O great king, the son of Pakashasana conquered.

The warrior's foresight is notable here: 'having taken the strong part of his army and released the weak.' One who goes toward the hardest tasks does not burden himself with the unfit but takes only what is reliable — wisdom lies not only in courage but in the sober selection of one's forces. So too in spiritual matters: on a steep path one must take only what can withstand the climb, setting aside the feeble and the enervating. The verse teaches that valor without discernment is blind; and whoever would overcome the inaccessible first tests and purifies his means.
