शिरश् चिच्छेद गच्छन्त्यास् ताम् अपश्यत् सुरेश्वरः ॥

Here the mother too perishes in her effort to save her son. It is significant that Arjuna strikes down the serpent-mother: this is a fearsome and sorrowful moment, where love does not turn aside death. Thus is disclosed the severity of destruction permitted from above, which spares not even those who love. Thus the scripture reveals the mother's death; and Indra, having witnessed it, will intercede for his grandson [Ashvasena].
