तपस्वी यज्ञकृच् चासि न तु ते विद्यते प्रजा ॥

The gods said: "In debt are men born, O brahmin; hear by what: by rites, by celibate study, and by offspring, without doubt; all of that is discharged by sacrifice, by austerity, and by sons; an ascetic and a sacrificer you are, but you have no offspring."

Here the teaching of the three debts of man is disclosed. It is telling that man is born a debtor: to the gods [by sacrifice], to the sages [by study], and to the ancestors [by offspring]; and the debt to the ancestors is paid by sons. Here it becomes clear that righteousness has many parts: austerity alone does not suffice if the duty of continuing the line remains unfulfilled. So the scripture reveals the dharma of the three debts; and Mandapala is shown the debt still unpaid.
