Here the god's promise shields the sons amid universal destruction. It is significant that Agni gives his word to spare the fledglings — and then blazes up: mercy and destruction are joined in one. This reveals that even in the hour of ruin, mercy is preserved for those who have taken refuge. Thus the scripture reveals Agni's vow; and so, as we shall see, the four Sharngakas will survive in the flame.
