तस्मिन् गते महाभागे लपितां प्रति भारत ॥
अपत्यस्नेहसंविग्ना जरिता बह्व् अचिन्तयत् ॥
तेन त्यक्तान् असंत्याज्यान् ऋषीन् अण्डगतान् वने ॥
नाजहत् पुत्रकान् आर्ता जरिता खाण्डवे नृप ॥
बभार चैतान् संजातान् स्ववृत्त्या स्नेहविक्लवा ॥
tasmin gate mahābhāge lapitāṃ prati bhārata ||
apatyasnehasaṃvignā jaritā bahv acintayat ||
tena tyaktān asaṃtyājyān ṛṣīn aṇḍagatān vane ||
nājahat putrakān ārtā jaritā khāṇḍave nṛpa ||
babhāra caitān saṃjātān svavṛttyā snehaviklavā ||
"When that most fortunate one had gone to Lapita, troubled by love for her offspring, Jarita pondered much; those abandoned by him, though not to be abandoned -- sages in the form of fledglings in eggs in the forest -- the grieving Jarita did not abandon her little sons in Khandava; and she nourished them once born, by her own labor, distraught with love."

Here shines a mother's faithfulness that does not abandon her children. It is telling that Jarita, unlike the father, "did not abandon her little sons": a mother's love does not depart where the father has withdrawn. In this lies the height of maternal self-giving. So the scripture reveals Jarita's devotion; and her love will become the fledglings' refuge before the fire yet to come.
