संजय उवाच
ततः संध्याम् उपास्यैव वीरौ वीरावसादने ॥
कथयन्तौ रणे वृत्तं प्रयातौ रथम् आस्थितौ ॥
ततः स्वशिबिरं प्राप्तौ हतानन्दं हतत्विषम् ॥
वासुदेवो ऽर्जुनश् चैव कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम् ॥
ध्वस्ताकारं समालक्ष्य शिबिरं परवीरहा ॥
बीभत्सुर् अब्रवीत् कृष्णम् अस्वस्थहृदयस् ततः ॥

tataḥ saṃdhyām upāsyaiva vīrau vīrāvasādane ||
kathayantau raṇe vṛttaṃ prayātau ratham āsthitau ||
tataḥ svaśibiraṃ prāptau hatānandaṃ hatatviṣam ||
vāsudevo 'rjunaś caiva kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram ||
dhvastākāraṃ samālakṣya śibiraṃ paravīrahā ||
bībhatsur abravīt kṛṣṇam asvasthahṛdayas tataḥ ||
Then, having performed the twilight rite, the two heroes, in grief for the fallen, speaking of what had happened in the battle, set out upon the chariot. And they reached their own camp — joyless, its splendor dimmed — Vasudeva and Arjuna, having accomplished their most arduous feat. Noticing the camp of stricken aspect, the slayer of enemy heroes, Bibhatsu, with troubled heart then spoke to Krishna.

Even in distress the warriors first perform "saṃdhyām upāsya", the twilight rite: duty toward sacred time is not set aside by grief. The camp meets them "hatānandam hatatviṣam", "without joy, without splendor" — a place where the hero's return is usually met with rejoicing has gone dim. It is telling that Arjuna, "having accomplished the most arduous feat", rides not into triumph but into mute sorrow. The verse teaches that outward signs — a drooping camp, a quenched light — speak to the heart before any words do, and true victory can meet a warrior with the silence of loss.
