अपि स्वस्ति भवेद् अद्य भ्रातृभ्यो मम माधव ॥
न हि शुध्यति मे भावो दृष्ट्वा स्वजनम् आकुलम् ॥
अपि पाञ्चालराजस्य विराटस्य च मानद ॥
सर्वेषां चैव योधानां सामग्र्यं स्यान् ममाच्युत ॥
न च माम् अद्य सौभद्रः प्रहृष्टो भ्रातृभिः सह ॥
रणाद् आयान्तम् उचितं प्रत्युद्याति हसन्न् इव ॥
api svasti bhaved adya bhrātṛbhyo mama mādhava ||
na hi śudhyati me bhāvo dṛṣṭvā svajanam ākulam ||
api pāñcālarājasya virāṭasya ca mānada ||
sarveṣāṃ caiva yodhānāṃ sāmagryaṃ syān mamācyuta ||
na ca mām adya saubhadraḥ prahṛṣṭo bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ||
raṇād āyāntam ucitaṃ pratyudyāti hasann iva ||
"Is all well today with my brothers, O Madhava? My mind is not at ease, seeing my own kin in disarray. Is the array whole with the king of Panchala and with Virata, O honorer, and with all my warriors, O Achyuta? And today the son of Subhadra, rejoicing, together with his brothers, does not come out — as usual — to meet me returning from battle, as though with a smile."

Arjuna's anxiety narrows from the general to the dearest: from brothers and allies to a single name. "Na ca mām adya saubhadraḥ… pratyudyāti hasan iva" — gone is the one who always ran first, smiling, to greet his father. The absence of the accustomed joyful welcome is itself the news the heart has already grasped, though the lips do not yet dare to speak it. It is telling that love recognizes loss by the emptiness left where accustomed happiness stood. The verse teaches that some losses are announced not by what has happened, but by what has ceased to be.
