"That same Partha has passed by before your eyes, O greatly radiant one; for I now consider everything ruined — this army of mine no longer exists. I know you, O most blessed one, to be devoted to the welfare of the Pandavas; and so I am in confusion, O brahmin, pondering the urgency of the task. And according to my ability, O brahmin, I show you the utmost honor and please you as best I can, and that you do not perceive."

Duryodhana reproaches Drona with benefits received: "vartaye vṛttim uttamām... tac ca tvaṃ na avabudhyase", "I maintain you honorably, and you do not value it". So self-interest sees in every bond only a transaction awaiting return. He accuses his teacher of secret sympathy for the Pandavas. It is telling that suspicion is the companion of the unrighteous. The verse teaches that an impure heart measures others by itself: whoever serves for gain sees a debt even in a kindness and reproaches it; and suspicion toward the faithful is a sign that the suspicious one does not himself know unselfish loyalty.
