करिष्यामि प्रयत्नेन भ्रातुर् अन्वेषणं यदि ॥
युयुधानम् अनन्विष्य लोको मां गर्हयिष्यति ॥
भ्रातुर् अन्वेषणं कृत्वा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
परित्यजति वार्ष्णेयं सात्यकिं सत्यविक्रमम् ॥
लोकापवादभीरुत्वात् सो ऽहं पार्थं वृकोदरम् ॥
पदवीं प्रेषयिष्यामि माधवस्य महात्मनः ॥
kariṣyāmi prayatnena bhrātur anveṣaṇaṃ yadi ||
yuyudhānam ananviṣya loko māṃ garhayiṣyati ||
bhrātur anveṣaṇaṃ kṛtvā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
parityajati vārṣṇeyaṃ sātyakiṃ satyavikramam ||
lokāpavādabhīrutvāt so 'haṃ pārthaṃ vṛkodaram ||
padavīṃ preṣayiṣyāmi mādhavasya mahātmanaḥ ||
"If I make diligent search for my brother without seeking out Yuyudhana, the world will condemn me: 'Occupied with the search for his brother, the King of Dharma Yudhishthira abandons the Varshneya, Satyaki, of true valor.' Out of fear of the world's reproach, I shall send Partha Vrikodara along the trail of Madhava, the great in spirit."

Yudhishthira fears "lokāpavāda", people's reproach — the accusation that he cares for his brother while forgetting a faithful friend. It is telling that even in his anguish he preserves fairness toward both. The verse teaches that the righteous do not let love for their own eclipse duty toward another: even in fear for his brother he remembers the friend entrusted to danger, for justice makes no distinction among those held dear.
