ऋजून्य् एव विशुद्धानि सर्वे शस्त्राण्य् अधारयन् ॥
सुयुद्धेन परांल् लोकान् ईप्सन्तः कीर्तिम् एव च ॥
तदासीत् तुमुलं युद्धं सर्वदोषविवर्जितम् ॥
चतुर्णां तव योधानां तैस् त्रिभिः पाण्डवैः सह ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नस् तु तान् हित्वा तव राजन् रथर्षभान् ॥
यमाभ्यां वारितान् दृष्ट्वा शीघ्रास्त्रो द्रोणम् अभ्ययात् ॥
निवारितास् तु ते वीरास् तयोः पुरुषसिंहयोः ॥
समसज्जन्त चत्वारो वाताः पर्वतयोर् इव ॥

suyuddhena parāṃl lokān īpsantaḥ kīrtim eva ca ||
tadāsīt tumulaṃ yuddhaṃ sarvadoṣavivarjitam ||
caturṇāṃ tava yodhānāṃ tais tribhiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ||
dhṛṣṭadyumnas tu tān hitvā tava rājan ratharṣabhān ||
yamābhyāṃ vāritān dṛṣṭvā śīghrāstro droṇam abhyayāt ||
nivāritās tu te vīrās tayoḥ puruṣasiṃhayoḥ ||
samasajjanta catvāro vātāḥ parvatayor iva ||
Only straight, pure arrows did they all hold; by good combat seeking the higher worlds, and fame. Then there was a tumultuous battle, free from all faults, of your four warriors with those three Pandavas. But Dhrishtadyumna, having left those bulls among your warriors, O king, seeing them held back by the twins, swift in the use of weapons, advanced upon Drona. And those heroes, held back by those two lions among men [the twins], clashed, the four of them, like winds at two mountains.

The warriors fight 'good combat, desiring the higher worlds and fame': their goal is not earthly gain but heaven and honor. It is telling that noble battle itself is conceived as a path to the highest course. The verse teaches that even in combat one can seek not plunder but honor and the world above: whoever fights cleanly, aspiring to fame and heaven, turns battle into service; and it is the aim of the heart, not the sword itself, that determines where the path leads.
