संदधे कार्मुके तस्मिञ् शरम् आशीविषोपमम् ॥

द्योततो भास्करस्येव घनान्ते परिवेशिनः ॥
पार्षतेन परामृष्टं ज्वलन्तम् इव तद् धनुः ॥
अन्तकालम् इव प्राप्तं मेनिरे वीक्ष्य सैनिकाः ॥
तम् इषुं संहितं तेन भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान् ॥
दृष्ट्वामन्यत देहस्य कालपर्यायम् आगतम् ॥

tasya rūpaṃ śarasyāsīd dhanurjyāmaṇḍalāntare ||

pārṣatena parāmṛṣṭaṃ jvalantam iva tad dhanuḥ ||
antakālam iva prāptaṃ menire vīkṣya sainikāḥ ||
tam iṣuṃ saṃhitaṃ tena bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān ||
dṛṣṭvāmanyata dehasya kālaparyāyam āgatam ||
The Panchala, longing to strike down Drona, fitted to that bow an arrow resembling a serpent, himself like a great-flamed fire. The form of that arrow, within the circle of the bow and bowstring, was like that of the shining sun emerging from clouds, ringed with a halo. Touched by Parshata's hand, that bow seemed to blaze, and the warriors, seeing it, deemed that the hour of death had come. Bharadvaja [Drona], formidable, seeing that arrow fitted by him, thought that for his body the turn of the final hour had come.

Drona, seeing Dhrishtadyumna's blazing arrow, himself thinks: the turn of his death has come. It is telling that he accepts fate without confusion, like a wise man who has foreseen his hour. The verse teaches that to recognize one's own hour is a gift of wisdom: one who sees the approach of the end and meets it clearly holds mastery of himself even in death; and unlike blind fear, a clear foreknowledge of death is the mark of a spirit reconciled with the law of time.
