अनापृच्छ्य च राजानं गते मयि न संशयः ॥
अजातशत्रोर् नृपतेर् मम चैवाप्रियं भवेत् ॥
अनुप्रवेशे राज्ञस् तु वनवासो भवेन् मम ॥
अधर्मो वा महान् अस्तु वने वा मरणं मम ॥
शरीरस्यापि नाशेन धर्म एव विशिष्यते ॥
anāpṛcchya ca rājānaṃ gate mayi na saṃśayaḥ ||
ajātaśatror nṛpater mama caivāpriyaṃ bhavet ||
anupraveśe rājñas tu vanavāso bhaven mama ||
adharmo vā mahān astu vane vā maraṇaṃ mama ||
śarīrasyāpi nāśena dharma eva viśiṣyate ||
"And if, without asking the king, I go, without doubt this would be displeasing to King Yudhishthira and to me as well; yet if I enter where the king is, exile to the forest would be mine; let there be great unrighteousness, or let death be mine in the forest — even at the cost of the body's destruction, dharma alone stands supreme."

Here dharma is proclaimed higher than life itself. It is telling that Arjuna resolves: "even at the cost of the body's destruction, dharma stands supreme" — he chooses duty, ready to accept exile and death. In this is the summit of spiritual courage: the body is perishable, dharma eternal, and for its sake life itself is not spared. Thus scripture shows Arjuna's self-renunciation; and in his choice he places truth above himself.
