सो ऽभिवाद्य गुरून् सर्वांस् तैश् चापि प्रतिनन्दितः ॥
धर्मराजम् उवाचेदं व्रतम् आदिश्यतां मम ॥
समयः समतिक्रान्तो भवत्संदर्शनान् मया ॥
वनवासं गमिष्यामि समयो ह्य् एष नः कृतः ॥

धर्मराजम् उवाच इदं व्रतम् आदिश्यतां ममdharmarājam uvāca idaṃ vratam ādiśyatāṃ mamasaid this to the Dharma King: "let my vow be appointed [/pronounced upon me];
समयः समतिक्रान्तः भवत्संदर्शनात् मयाsamayaḥ samatikrāntaḥ bhavatsaṃdarśanāt mayāthe agreement has been broken by me — through the sight of you [with Draupadi];
वनवासं गमिष्यामि समयः हि एषः नः कृतःvanavāsaṃ gamiṣyāmi samayaḥ hi eṣaḥ naḥ kṛtaḥI shall go into exile in the forest, for such is the agreement we made";

अनुवाद
Arjuna said: "He, having bowed to all the elders and being greeted by them, said this to the Dharma King: 'Let my vow be appointed; the agreement has been broken by me — through the sight of you with Draupadi; I shall go into exile in the forest, for such is the agreement we made.'"

Here one faithful to his word himself calls down the penalty upon himself. It is telling that Arjuna does not conceal his breach nor seek leniency for himself, but himself demands that the vow be imposed: the conscientious man judges himself more strictly than others would judge him. Honor rests not on fear of exposure but on inner truthfulness. Thus scripture shows Arjuna's incorruptible conscience; and he himself condemns himself to exile.
