अर्जुन उवाच
न व्याजेन चरेद् धर्मम् इति मे भवतः श्रुतम् ॥
न सत्याद् विचलिष्यामि सत्येनायुधम् आलभे ॥

Here Arjuna rejects the loophole, placing the spirit of truth above its letter. It is significant that he reminds his elder brother of his own words: "do not practice dharma with deceit" -- to keep the vow through a clever interpretation would betray truth itself. Significant too is "by truth I take up the weapon": the valor of a kshatriya must rest on truthfulness. Here is the height of satya, for which the honor of one's word is dearer than convenience. Thus the scripture shows Arjuna's unbending truthfulness; he chooses exile rather than deceit.
