अनुवाद

The soul governs them. That learned man who knows all this is truly wise. O Dhritarashtra, these ten do not know what virtue is: the intoxicated, the careless, the delirious, the exhausted, the wrathful, the hungry, the hasty, the greedy, the fearful, and the lustful. Therefore the wise should avoid the company of such people. In this connection an old story is cited about what passed between Suyodhana and Prahlada, lord of the asuras, concerning the latter's son. That king who renounces lust and anger, who bestows wealth on those who receive it, and who is discerning, learned, and active, is regarded as an authority among all people. Great prosperity attends the king who knows how to inspire trust in others, who punishes those whose guilt is proven, who is familiar with the proper measure of punishment, and who knows when mercy should be shown. It is the wise man who does not overlook even a weak enemy; who acts prudently toward an enemy, anxiously watching for opportunity; who does not seek enmity with those stronger than himself; and who displays his skill at the right moment.
