कथम् इन्दीवरश्यामं सुदंष्ट्रं चारुलोचनम् ॥
मुखं ते दृश्यते वत्स गुण्ठितं रणरेणुना ॥
नूनं शूरं निपतितं त्वां पश्यन्त्य् अनिवर्तिनम् ॥
सुशिरोग्रीवबाह्वंसं व्यूढोरस्कं निरूदरम् ॥
चारूपचितसर्वाङ्गं स्वक्षं शस्त्रक्षताचितम् ॥
भूतानि त्वा निरीक्षन्ते नूनं चन्द्रम् इवोदितम् ॥
katham indīvaraśyāmaṃ sudaṃṣṭraṃ cārulocanam ||
mukhaṃ te dṛśyate vatsa guṇṭhitaṃ raṇareṇunā ||
nūnaṃ śūraṃ nipatitaṃ tvāṃ paśyanty anivartinam ||
suśirogrīvabāhvaṃsaṃ vyūḍhoraskaṃ nirūdaram ||
cārūpacitasarvāṅgaṃ svakṣaṃ śastrakṣatācitam ||
bhūtāni tvā nirīkṣante nūnaṃ candram ivoditam ||
"How is it that your face, child — dark like a blue lotus, with beautiful teeth, wondrous-eyed — now appears shrouded in the dust of battle? Surely they see you, the fallen brave one, unyielding: with beautiful head, neck, arms and shoulders, broad-chested, with a lean waist, with all your limbs beautifully formed, clear-eyed, strewn with wounds — creatures gaze upon you, as upon the risen moon."

The mother paints her son's features and form as the father once did — but her voice carries a special note: 'guṇṭhitaṃ raṇareṇunā,' 'shrouded in the dust of battle,' the face she once washed and kissed. The wounds on his body — 'śastrakṣatācitam' — she sees not as disgrace but as a crown: they gaze upon the fallen one, 'candram iva uditam,' as upon the risen moon. It is telling that even in the flesh's disfigurement a mother beholds light. The verse teaches that a mother's love sees beauty and holiness even in her son's mutilated body, turning wounds into signs of valor and dust into a frame for a moonlike face.
