साम्ना ये सर्वभूतानि गच्छन्ति गतमत्सराः ॥
नारुंतुदानां क्षमिणां या गतिस् ताम् अवाप्नुहि ॥
मधुमांसनिवृत्तानां मदाद् दम्भात् तथानृतात् ॥
परोपतापत्यक्तानां तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक ॥
ह्रीमन्तः सर्वशास्त्रज्ञा ज्ञानतृप्ता जितेन्द्रियाः ॥
यां गतिं साधवो यान्ति तां गतिं व्रज पुत्रक ॥
sāmnā ye sarvabhūtāni gacchanti gatamatsarāḥ ||
nāruṃtudānāṃ kṣamiṇāṃ yā gatis tām avāpnuhi ||
madhumāṃsanivṛttānāṃ madād dambhāt tathānṛtāt ||
paropatāpatyaktānāṃ tāṃ gatiṃ vraja putraka ||
hrīmantaḥ sarvaśāstrajñā jñānatṛptā jitendriyāḥ ||
yāṃ gatiṃ sādhavo yānti tāṃ gatiṃ vraja putraka ||
Those who approach all beings with gentleness, free from envy, not wounding, patient — whatever their lot, attain that. Those abstaining from intoxicants and meat, from arrogance, hypocrisy, and falsehood, not tormenting others — attain that lot, son. Modest, knowers of all scriptures, satisfied with knowledge, their senses subdued — whatever lot the righteous attain, attain that, son.

The blessing is crowned with the highest virtues of the spirit: gentleness toward all that lives, freedom from malice, restraint, truthfulness, mastery of the senses, contentment in knowledge. "Yāṃ gatiṃ sādhavaḥ yānti" — "to whatever lot the righteous go" — the mother asks for her son the very path of the saints. It is telling that from death in battle her love raises him to the lot of the sages, the sadhus. The verse teaches that a mother's prayer for the soul of the departed reaches for the highest: not merely for heavens of pleasure, but for the lot of the righteous, who have mastered themselves and are satisfied with knowledge — for love desires for the beloved nothing less than the lot of the saints themselves.
