यमदंष्ट्रान्तरं प्राप्तो मुच्येतापि हि मानवः ॥
नार्जुनस्य वशं प्राप्तो मुच्येताजौ जयद्रथः ॥
स तथा कुरु शोणाश्व यथा रक्ष्येत सैन्धवः ॥
मम चार्तप्रलापानां मा क्रुधः पाहि सैन्धवम् ॥
yamadaṃṣṭrāntaraṃ prāpto mucyetāpi hi mānavaḥ ||
nārjunasya vaśaṃ prāpto mucyetājau jayadrathaḥ ||
sa tathā kuru śoṇāśva yathā rakṣyeta saindhavaḥ ||
mama cārtapralāpānāṃ mā krudhaḥ pāhi saindhavam ||
"A man who has fallen between the jaws of Yama may yet be freed, but Jayadratha, having fallen into Arjuna's power, will not be freed in battle. So arrange, O red-horsed one, that the man of Sindhu be protected; and do not be angry at my grief-stricken lamentations — protect the man of Sindhu."

By the end Duryodhana's anger subsides into pleading: "mā krudhaḥ pāhi saindhavam", "do not be angry, protect the man of Sindhu". Sensing the injustice of his reproaches, he asks forgiveness for his "ārtapralāpāḥ", grief-stricken outcries. It is telling that despair first pours out as offense and then as entreaty. The verse teaches indulgence toward the words of despair: one who suffers throws out reproaches his heart does not truly hold, and then softens; and the wise, like Drona, does not answer this with anger, discerning under the sting the pain, and under the offense a plea for help.
