द्रोण उवाच
नाभ्यसूयामि ते वाचम् अश्वत्थाम्नासि मे समः ॥
सत्यं तु ते प्रवक्ष्यामि तज् जुषस्व विशां पते ॥
सारथिः प्रवरः कृष्णः शीघ्राश् चास्य हयोत्तमाः ॥
अल्पं च विवरं कृत्वा तूर्णं याति धनंजयः ॥

droṇa uvāca
nābhyasūyāmi te vācam aśvatthāmnāsi me samaḥ ||
satyaṃ tu te pravakṣyāmi taj juṣasva viśāṃ pate ||
sārathiḥ pravaraḥ kṛṣṇaḥ śīghrāś cāsya hayottamāḥ ||
alpaṃ ca vivaraṃ kṛtvā tūrṇaṃ yāti dhanaṃjayaḥ ||

शब्दशः अर्थ

न अभ्यसूयामि ते वाचम्na abhyasūyāmi te vācamI am not angry at your words; I do not resent your speech
अश्वत्थाम्ना असि मे समःaśvatthāmnā asi me samaḥyou are equal to me as Ashvatthaman; you are equal to me as Ashvatthaman is
सत्यम् तु ते प्रवक्ष्यामिsatyam tu te pravakṣyāmibut I will tell you the truth; but I shall tell you the truth
तत् जुषस्व विशां पतेtat juṣasva viśāṃ pateaccept it, O lord of peoples; accept it, O sovereign
सारथिः प्रवरः कृष्णःsārathiḥ pravaraḥ kṛṣṇaḥthe charioteer supreme — Krishna; the charioteer supreme — Krishna
शीघ्राः च अस्य हयोत्तमाःśīghrāḥ ca asya hayottamāḥand swift are his best horses; and swift are his finest horses
अल्पम् च विवरम् कृत्वाalpam ca vivaram kṛtvāand, having made a small gap; and, having opened a small breach
तूर्णम् याति धनंजयःtūrṇam yāti dhanaṃjayaḥDhananjaya rides swiftly; Dhananjaya speeds swiftly
अनुवाद

[Drona:] "I am not angry at your words; you are equal to me as Ashvatthaman is. But I will tell you the truth — accept it, O lord of peoples: the charioteer of Arjuna is supreme — Krishna, and swift are his best horses; and, having made a small gap, Dhananjaya rides swiftly through."
