अनादिष्टस् तु गुरुणा को नु युध्येत मानवः ॥
आदिष्टस् तु त्वया राजन् को न युध्येत मादृशः ॥
अभिजानामि तं देशं यत्र यास्याम्य् अहं प्रभो ॥
हुडशक्तिगदाप्रासखड्गचर्मर्ष्टितोमरम् ॥
इष्वस्त्रवरसंबाधं क्षोभयिष्ये बलार्णवम् ॥
anādiṣṭas tu guruṇā ko nu yudhyeta mānavaḥ ||
ādiṣṭas tu tvayā rājan ko na yudhyeta mādṛśaḥ ||
abhijānāmi taṃ deśaṃ yatra yāsyāmy ahaṃ prabho ||
huḍaśaktigadāprāsakhaḍgacarmarṣṭitomaram ||
iṣvastravarasaṃbādhaṃ kṣobhayiṣye balārṇavam ||
"One who has not received a command from an elder — what man would fight? But commanded by you, O king, who, being like me, would not fight? That ocean of an army, bristling with shields, spears, maces, javelins, swords, shields, blades, lances, arrows and the finest weapons — I shall churn it up, that ocean of a host."

Satyaki draws his resolve from the elder's command: "ādiṣṭas tvayā… ko na yudhyeta mādṛśaḥ." An action consecrated by the will of a worthy person gains legitimacy and strength. It is significant that his valor is not self-will but obedience. The verse teaches that the noblest deed is done not from whim but by the command of one to whom obedience is due; the command of a righteous elder turns battle from presumption into duty, and so the devoted one enters it without hesitation.
