And what are these huge elephants, born of the line of Anjana, both fierce and well-trained, their temples and trunks streaming with musth, richly adorned with wholly golden armor, their eye trained in battle, O king, equal to Airavata in combat? These are from the northern mountain, mounted by fierce brigands, stern and excellent warriors clad in armor of black iron. Here too are some of bovine stock, some of monkey stock, and others of many kinds, as well as of human stock. This army of the wicked rises smoke-colored — of mleccha evildoers dwelling in the strongholds of the Himalayas.

This army is called the army of the wicked, of evildoers, and its hue is smoke-dark, like a veil of impurity. It is telling that the nature of a host shows through in its very appearance. The verse teaches that inner nature betrays itself outwardly: a host gathered from those who do evil looks grim as smoke, for wrongness does not hide completely — it shows in outward form, and the one who beholds it can discern by its look the very spirit of the gathering.
