ततो भीमस् त्रिभिर् विद्ध्वा कृतवर्माणम् आयसैः ॥
शङ्खं दध्मौ महाबाहुर् हर्षयन् सर्वपाण्डवान् ॥
सहदेवस् तु विंशत्या धर्मराजश् च पञ्चभिः ॥
शतेन नकुलश् चापि हार्दिक्यं समविध्यत ॥
द्रौपदेयास् त्रिसप्तत्या सप्तभिश् च घटोत्कचः ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नस् त्रिभिश् चापि कृतवर्माणम् आर्दयत् ॥
विराटो द्रुपदश् चैव याज्ञसेनिश् च पञ्चभिः ॥
tato bhīmas tribhir viddhvā kṛtavarmāṇam āyasaiḥ ||
śaṅkhaṃ dadhmau mahābāhur harṣayan sarvapāṇḍavān ||
sahadevas tu viṃśatyā dharmarājaś ca pañcabhiḥ ||
śatena nakulaś cāpi hārdikyaṃ samavidhyata ||
draupadeyās trisaptatyā saptabhiś ca ghaṭotkacaḥ ||
dhṛṣṭadyumnas tribhiś cāpi kṛtavarmāṇam ārdayat ||
virāṭo drupadaś caiva yājñaseniś ca pañcabhiḥ ||
Then Bhima, having pierced Kritavarman with three iron [arrows], blew [his] conch, the mighty-armed one, gladdening all the Pandavas. And Sahadeva [pierced him] with twenty, the King of Dharma with five, and Nakula with a hundred, the son of Hridika. The sons of Draupadi with seventy-three, and Ghatotkacha with seven, and Dhrishtadyumna with three tormented Kritavarman.

A whole host of Pandavas strikes one man at once: each contributes his share of arrows to the common downpour upon Kritavarman. It is significant that even the combined effort of so many heroes does not overcome him at once. The verse teaches that the firmness of one, resting on valor, can hold out against the concerted assault of many; and though in the end numbers prevail, the steadfastness of one man before a whole army remains a measure of true courage.
