स गाढविद्धो बलवान् हार्दिक्यस्य शरोत्तमैः ॥
चचाल रथमध्यस्थः क्षितिकम्पे यथाचलः ॥
भीमसेनं तथा दृष्ट्वा धर्मराजपुरोगमाः ॥
विसृजन्तः शरान् घोरान् कृतवर्माणम् आर्दयन् ॥
तं तथा कोष्ठकीकृत्य रथवंशेन मारिष ॥
विव्यधुः सायकैर् हृष्टा रक्षार्थं मारुतेर् मृधे ॥
sa gāḍhaviddho balavān hārdikyasya śarottamaiḥ ||
cacāla rathamadhyasthaḥ kṣitikampe yathācalaḥ ||
bhīmasenaṃ tathā dṛṣṭvā dharmarājapurogamāḥ ||
visṛjantaḥ śarān ghorān kṛtavarmāṇam ārdayan ||
taṃ tathā koṣṭhakīkṛtya rathavaṃśena māriṣa ||
vivyadhuḥ sāyakair hṛṣṭā rakṣārthaṃ māruter mṛdhe ||
He, mighty, deeply pierced by the son of Hridika's excellent arrows, reeled, standing [in] the middle of the chariot, like a mountain at an earthquake. Seeing Bhimasena thus, [the warriors] [led] by the King of Dharma, loosing terrible arrows, harried Kritavarman. Having thus enclosed him with a row of chariots, O venerable one, they pierced [him] with arrows, rejoicing, for the protection of the son of the Wind [Bhima] in the fray.

Even mighty Bhima "cacāla... kṣitikampe yathā acalaḥ," reeled like a mountain in an earthquake: even the strongest can be shaken, though not broken. His brothers close in at once, "rakṣārthaṃ māruteḥ," for his protection. It is significant that the whole brotherhood rises in the distress of one. The verse teaches that even the mighty are not invulnerable, but neither are they alone: where there are loving companions, the one who reels is caught, and the strength of brotherhood makes up for the momentary weakness even of the strongest.
