[Kripa,] with the lion's tail on his banner, displaying his own power, the son of Sharadvati, O king, repelled Arjuna. Having pierced Partha with ten arrows and Vasudeva with seven, he stood on the chariot-paths, guarding Saindhava. Then the best of the Kurus, all the maharathas, encircled him from every side with a great array of chariots. Drawing their bows and hurling arrows, they guarded Saindhava by the command of your son.

Kripa and the whole company of maharathas form a living wall around Jayadratha at Duryodhana's command: the whole army is bent to saving one man. It is telling that the valor of so many is turned not toward victory but toward delay. The verse teaches that the greatest strength, set to the service of unrighteous shelter, is spent in vain; and to shield the condemned at the cost of many valiant men is not a leader's wisdom but a stubbornness that draws them all toward a common ruin.
