तं कर्णः संयुगे राजन् प्रत्यवारयद् आशुगैः ॥
मिषतो भीमसेनस्य सात्वतस्य च भारत ॥
तं पार्थो दशभिर् बाणैः प्रत्यविध्यद् रणाजिरे ॥
सूतपुत्रं महाबाहुः सर्वसैन्यस्य पश्यतः ॥
सात्वतश् च त्रिभिर् बाणैः कर्णं विव्याध मारिष ॥
भीमसेनस् त्रिभिश् चैव पुनः पार्थश् च सप्तभिः ॥
तान् कर्णः प्रतिविव्याध षष्ट्या षष्ट्या महारथः ॥
तद् युद्धम् अभवद् राजन् कर्णस्य बहुभिः सह ॥
taṃ karṇaḥ saṃyuge rājan pratyavārayad āśugaiḥ ||
miṣato bhīmasenasya sātvatasya ca bhārata ||
taṃ pārtho daśabhir bāṇaiḥ pratyavidhyad raṇājire ||
sūtaputraṃ mahābāhuḥ sarvasainyasya paśyataḥ ||
sātvataś ca tribhir bāṇaiḥ karṇaṃ vivyādha māriṣa ||
bhīmasenas tribhiś caiva punaḥ pārthaś ca saptabhiḥ ||
tān karṇaḥ prativivyādha ṣaṣṭyā ṣaṣṭyā mahārathaḥ ||
tad yuddham abhavad rājan karṇasya bahubhiḥ saha ||
Karna, O king, repelled him in the encounter with swift arrows before the eyes of Bhimasena and of Satvata [Satyaki], O Bharata. Partha, the mighty-armed, struck the son of the charioteer in return with ten arrows on the field of battle, before the eyes of the whole army. And Satvata pierced Karna with three arrows, O venerable one, Bhimasena with three, and again Partha with seven. Karna, the great warrior, struck them in return with sixty arrows each; that battle, O king, was Karna's against many.

Karna alone answers four — Partha, Satyaki, Bhima — measuring sixty to each: his valor is genuine even on the unrighteous side. It is telling that the narrator honors his steadfastness against so many. The verse teaches that courage is worthy of recognition on either side; and one who alone holds his own against four of the greatest shows a strength deserving praise, however unjust the cause for which he stands.
