वधार्थं चास्य समरे सायकं सूर्यवर्चसम् ॥
चिक्षेप त्वरया युक्तस् त्वराकाले धनंजयः ॥
तम् आपतन्तं वेगेन द्रौणिश् चिच्छेद सायकम् ॥
अर्धचन्द्रेण तीक्ष्णेन स छिन्नः प्रापतद् भुवि ॥
अथान्यद् धनुर् आदाय सूतपुत्रः प्रतापवान् ॥
कर्णो ऽपि द्विषतां हन्ता छादयाम् आस फल्गुनम् ॥
सायकैर् बहुसाहस्रैः कृतप्रतिकृतेप्सया ॥
तौ वृषाव् इव नर्दन्तौ नरसिंहौ महारथौ ॥
सायकौघप्रतिच्छन्नं चक्रतुः खम् अजिह्मगैः ॥
अदृश्यौ च शरौघैस् तौ निघ्नताम् इतरेतरम् ॥
vadhārthaṃ cāsya samare sāyakaṃ sūryavarcasam ||
cikṣepa tvarayā yuktas tvarākāle dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
tam āpatantaṃ vegena drauṇiś ciccheda sāyakam ||
ardhacandreṇa tīkṣṇena sa chinnaḥ prāpatad bhuvi ||
athānyad dhanur ādāya sūtaputraḥ pratāpavān ||
karṇo 'pi dviṣatāṃ hantā chādayām āsa phalgunam ||
sāyakair bahusāhasraiḥ kṛtapratikṛtepsayā ||
tau vṛṣāv iva nardantau narasiṃhau mahārathau ||
sāyakaughapraticchannaṃ cakratuḥ kham ajihmagaiḥ ||
adṛśyau ca śaraughais tau nighnatām itaretaram ||
And to slay him in battle, Dhananjaya, seized with haste, in that hour of haste hurled an arrow with the splendor of the sun. That arrow, coming on with speed, Drauni [Ashvatthaman] cut with a sharp half-moon-shaped head; cut, it fell to the ground. Then, taking up another bow, the son of the charioteer, valiant Karna, slayer of foes, covered Phalguna with arrows. Those two, roaring like bulls, man-lions, great warriors, made the sky dense with a torrent of straight-flying shafts.

Ashvatthaman cuts down Arjuna's deadly arrow, saving Karna: comrades weave mutual protection, just as enemies do. It is telling that the fight between Arjuna and Karna is again equal — the sky is filled with the arrows of both. The verse teaches that in a great battle no one stands alone: both attacker and defender are held by a circle of companions, and so the outcome is decided not by one hand but by the interlocking of many wills, each faithful to its own side.
