धार्थं चास्य रे साकं सूर्यर्चसम्
चिक्षे त्वया युक्तस् त्वराकाले नंयः
तम् न्तं वेगे द्रौणिश् चिच्छे साकम्
र्धन्द्रे तीक्ष्णे छिन्नः प्रातद् भुवि
थान्यद् नुर् दा सूपुत्रः प्रतावान्
र्णो ऽपि द्वितां न्ता छायाम् ल्गुनम्
साकैर् हुसास्रैः कृप्रतिकृतेप्सया
तौ वृषाव् र्दन्तौ सिंहौ हाथौ
साकौप्रतिच्छन्नं क्रतुः खम् जिह्मगैः
दृश्यौ रौघैस् तौ निघ्नताम् रेरम्

tau vṛṣāv iva nardantau narasiṃhau marathau ||
yakaughapraticchannaṃ cakratuḥ kham ajihmagaiḥ ||
adṛśyau ca śaraughais tau nighnam itaretaram ||

अनुवाद

And to slay him in battle, Dhananjaya, seized with haste, in that hour of haste hurled an arrow with the splendor of the sun. That arrow, coming on with speed, Drauni [Ashvatthaman] cut with a sharp half-moon-shaped head; cut, it fell to the ground. Then, taking up another bow, the son of the charioteer, valiant Karna, slayer of foes, covered Phalguna with arrows. Those two, roaring like bulls, man-lions, great warriors, made the sky dense with a torrent of straight-flying shafts.
