तं विसंज्ञं समालोक्य युयुधानशरार्दितम् ॥
द्रौणिर् अभ्यद्रवत् क्रुद्धः सात्वतं रणमूर्धनि ॥
तम् आपतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य शैनेयस्य रथं प्रति ॥
भैमसेनिः सुसंक्रुद्धः प्रत्यमित्रम् अवारयत् ॥
कार्ष्णायसमयं घोरम् ऋक्षचर्मावृतं महत् ॥
युक्तं गजनिभैर् वाहैर् न हयैर् नापि वा गजैः ॥
विक्षिप्तम् अष्टचक्रेण विवृताक्षेण कूजता ॥
ध्वजेनोच्छ्रिततुण्डेन गृध्रराजेन राजता ॥
लोहितार्द्रपताकं तम् अन्त्रमालाविभूषितम् ॥
अष्टचक्रसमायुक्तम् आस्थाय विपुलं रथम् ॥
शूलमुद्गरधारिण्या शैलपादपहस्तया ॥
रक्षसां घोररूपाणाम् अक्षौहिण्या समावृतः ॥

tam āpatantaṃ saṃprekṣya śaineyasya rathaṃ prati ||

kārṣṇāyasamayaṃ ghoram ṛkṣacarmāvṛtaṃ mahat ||
yuktaṃ gajanibhair vāhair na hayair nāpi vā gajaiḥ ||
vikṣiptam aṣṭacakreṇa vivṛtākṣeṇa kūjatā ||
dhvajenocchritatuṇḍena gṛdhrarājena rājatā ||
lohitārdrapatākaṃ tam antramālāvibhūṣitam ||
aṣṭacakrasamāyuktam āsthāya vipulaṃ ratham ||
śūlamudgaradhāriṇyā śailapādapahastayā ||
rakṣasāṃ ghorarūpāṇām akṣauhiṇyā samāvṛtaḥ ||
Seeing him senseless, worn out by the arrows of Yuyudhana [Satyaki], Drauni [Ashvatthaman] rushed, enraged, at Satvata at the forefront of the battle. Seeing him bearing down toward the chariot of Shaineya, the son of Bhimasena [Ghatotkacha], enraged, repelled the foe — mounted on his huge, dreadful chariot of black iron, covered with bear-hide, yoked with elephant-like creatures, neither horses nor elephants; with eight wheels spread wide, with an exposed, creaking axle, with a standard whose beak was raised high, gleaming with the king of vultures; with a banner drenched in blood, adorned with garlands of entrails, fitted with eight wheels — mounted on this huge chariot, surrounded by rakshasas of dreadful form bearing tridents and clubs, rocks and trees in their hands, surrounded by a whole akshauhini.

Ghatotkacha appears in a sinister, otherworldly form — black iron, bear-hide, a vulture on the standard, garlands of entrails: the rakshasa host carries terror beyond the human. It is telling that he rises to shield the wounded Satyaki: monstrous in appearance, moved by loyalty to a comrade. The verse teaches that a fearsome form is not always a sign of an evil heart; and one terrible to look upon may go into battle to defend a friend — the substance of a deed matters more than its frightening outward form.
