अश्वत्थामा सुसंक्रुद्धः संधायोग्रम् अजिह्मगम् ॥
मुमोचाकर्णपूर्णेन धनुषा शरम् उत्तमम् ॥
यमदण्डोपमं घोरम् उद्दिश्याशु घटोत्कचम् ॥
स भित्त्वा हृदयं तस्य राक्षसस्य महाशरः ॥
विवेश वसुधां शीघ्रं सपुङ्खः पृथिवीपते ॥
तं हतं पतितं ज्ञात्वा धृष्टद्युम्नो महारथः ॥
द्रौणेः सकाशाद् राजेन्द्र अपनिन्ये रथान्तरम् ॥
तथा पराङ्मुखरथं सैन्यं यौधिष्ठिरं नृप ॥
पराजित्य रणे वीरो द्रोणपुत्रो ननाद ह ॥
पूजितः सर्वभूतैश् च तव पुत्रैश् च भारत ॥

mumocākarṇapūrṇena dhanuṣā śaram uttamam ||
yamadaṇḍopamaṃ ghoram uddiśyāśu ghaṭotkacam ||
sa bhittvā hṛdayaṃ tasya rākṣasasya mahāśaraḥ ||
viveśa vasudhāṃ śīghraṃ sapuṅkhaḥ pṛthivīpate ||
taṃ hataṃ patitaṃ jñātvā dhṛṣṭadyumno mahārathaḥ ||
drauṇeḥ sakāśād rājendra apaninye rathāntaram ||
tathā parāṅmukharathaṃ sainyaṃ yaudhiṣṭhiraṃ nṛpa ||
parājitya raṇe vīro droṇaputro nanāda ha ||
pūjitaḥ sarvabhūtaiś ca tava putraiś ca bhārata ||
Ashvatthaman, enraged, having nocked a fierce, straight-flying arrow, drew the bow to his ear and loosed the finest shaft. Piercing the heart of that rakshasa, the great arrow swiftly entered the earth with its feathering, O lord of the earth. Seeing him struck and fallen, Dhrishtadyumna, the maharatha, carried him away from Drauni's presence onto another chariot, O lord of kings. Thus, with the chariots of Yudhishthira's army turned to flight, the hero, the son of Drona, having prevailed in battle, roared aloud.

Ashvatthaman's arrow fells the rakshasa, and Dhrishtadyumna hastens to carry off the wounded one -- comradeship rescues the fallen from beneath the enemy's hand. It is telling that Yudhishthira's army turns and flees -- this night Ashvatthaman overcomes all. The verse teaches that even in the hour of another's triumph, loyalty does not abandon a comrade; and one who carries the wounded from under a death-dealing hand shows a friendship no less valorous than battle itself.
