अश्वत्थामा त्व् असंभ्रान्तो रुद्रोपेन्द्रेन्द्रविक्रमः ॥
ध्वजम् एकेन बाणेन चिच्छेदाञ्जनपर्वणः ॥
द्वाभ्यां तु रथयन्तारं त्रिभिश् चास्य त्रिवेणुकम् ॥
धनुर् एकेन चिच्छेद चतुर्भिश् चतुरो हयान् ॥
विरथस्योद्यतं हस्ताद् धेमबिन्दुभिर् आचितम् ॥
विशिखेन सुतीक्ष्णेन खड्गम् अस्य द्विधाकरोत् ॥
गदा हेमाङ्गदा राजंस् तूर्णं हैडिम्बसूनुना ॥
भ्राम्योत्क्षिप्ता शरैः सापि द्रौणिनाभ्याहतापतत् ॥

Ashvatthaman, however, unperturbed, with the valor of Rudra, Upendra, and Indra, cut Anjanaparvan's banner with one arrow, his charioteer with two, and his triple yoke-pole with three; he cut the bow with one arrow, and the four horses with four. From the hand of the now chariotless warrior, Ashvatthaman with an exceedingly sharp shaft cut in two the sword studded with drops of gold that he had raised. The mace ringed with gold, O king, swiftly seized by the son of Hidimba, was swung and hurled — and it too, struck down by Drauni's arrows, fell.

Ashvatthaman methodically strips his enemy of weapon after weapon — banner, charioteer, bow, horses, sword, mace: a mastery that leaves no support standing. It is significant that he is called 'asaṃbhrāntaḥ' — unperturbed: the highest skill is cool and unhurried. The verse teaches that true command of weapons shows itself in calm precision; and one who deprives an opponent of every support without haste or fear conquers not through fury but through honed skill.
