रथाक्षमात्रैर् इषुभिर् अभ्यवर्षद् घटोत्कचः ॥
रथिनाम् ऋषभं द्रौणिं धाराभिर् इव तोयदः ॥
शरवृष्टिं शरैर् द्रौणिर् अप्राप्तां तां व्यशातयत् ॥
ततो ऽन्तरिक्षे बाणानां संग्रामो ऽन्य इवाभवत् ॥
अथास्त्रसंघर्षकृतैर् विस्फुलिङ्गैः समाबभौ ॥
विभावरीमुखे व्योम खद्योतैर् इव चित्रितम् ॥
निशाम्य निहतां मायां द्रौणिना रणमानिना ॥
घटोत्कचस् ततो मायां ससर्जान्तर्हितः पुनः ॥

rathinām ṛṣabhaṃ drauṇiṃ dhārābhir iva toyadaḥ ||
śaravṛṣṭiṃ śarair drauṇir aprāptāṃ tāṃ vyaśātayat ||
tato 'ntarikṣe bāṇānāṃ saṃgrāmo 'nya ivābhavat ||
athāstrasaṃgharṣakṛtair visphuliṅgaiḥ samābabhau ||
vibhāvarīmukhe vyoma khadyotair iva citritam ||
niśāmya nihatāṃ māyāṃ drauṇinā raṇamāninā ||
ghaṭotkacas tato māyāṃ sasarjāntarhitaḥ punaḥ ||
With arrows the size of a chariot-axle Ghatotkacha showered Drauni, the bull among warriors, as a cloud pours down streams. That rain of arrows Drauni scattered with his own arrows before it could even reach him; then in the air a battle of arrows, as it were, arose. Then, with sparks born from the friction of astras, the sky at the onset of night shone as if painted with fireflies. Seeing his illusion destroyed by Drauni, proud in battle, Ghatotkacha then vanished again and wove a new illusion.

Arrows collide in the air, striking sparks like fireflies in the night sky: even amid nocturnal terror the poet perceives a fearsome beauty. It is significant that the battle unfolds both in the sky and in illusions: the contest has reached beyond earthly bounds. The verse teaches that a clash between equal masters passes beyond the limits of ordinary combat; and the sparks from arrows crossing in the sky are beautiful, yet they are the fire of mutual destruction, lighting up the darkness.
