व्यास उवाच
प्रजापतीनां प्रथमं तैजसं पुरुषं विभुम् ॥
भुवनं भूर् भुवं देवं सर्वलोकेश्वरं प्रभुम् ॥
ईशानं वरदं पार्थ दृष्टवान् असि शंकरम् ॥
तं गच्छ शरणं देवं सर्वादिं भुवनेश्वरम् ॥
महादेवं महात्मानम् ईशानं जटिलं शिवम् ॥
त्र्यक्षं महाभुजं रुद्रं शिखिनं चीरवाससम् ॥
दातारं चैव भक्तानां प्रसादविहितान् वरान् ॥

prajāpatīnāṃ prathamaṃ taijasaṃ puruṣaṃ vibhum ||
bhuvanaṃ bhūr bhuvaṃ devaṃ sarvalokeśvaraṃ prabhum ||
īśānaṃ varadaṃ pārtha dṛṣṭavān asi śaṃkaram ||
taṃ gaccha śaraṇaṃ devaṃ sarvādiṃ bhuvaneśvaram ||
mahādevaṃ mahātmānam īśānaṃ jaṭilaṃ śivam ||
tryakṣaṃ mahābhujaṃ rudraṃ śikhinaṃ cīravāsasam ||
dātāraṃ caiva bhaktānāṃ prasādavihitān varān ||
[Vyasa said:] "The foremost of the Prajapatis, the fiery [radiant] man, the all-powerful one, [existing as] the world, the earth and the atmosphere [bhur-bhuvah], the god, the lord of all worlds, the master, Ishana, the giver of boons, O Partha — that is Shankara whom you have seen. Go to him for refuge, to the god, the origin of all, the lord of the worlds: Mahadeva, the great-souled one, Ishana, matted-haired, Shiva, the three-eyed, mighty-armed Rudra, with a topknot, clad in bark garments; and the giver to devotees of boons granted by his grace."

Vyasa now reveals it: the fiery warrior is Mahadeva himself, the "origin of all," and he calls Arjuna to seek refuge in him. It is telling that the fearsome warrior is also "the giver of boons to devotees by grace": might and mercy are one in him. The verse teaches that the highest reveals itself both as fearsome and as merciful; the wise are directed toward refuge in the One who, behind the events of battle, stands as lord of all worlds.
