"Then the gods withdrew, trembling, having bowed before him; and again he fitted a blazing arrow, sharpened against the gods. And they appointed Rudra's share in the sacrifice as a special one; out of fear the thirty [gods], O king, took refuge [in him]. And thereby, despite [his] excessive wrath, that sacrifice was then restored; the gods were on their guard, and remain on their guard before him even to this day."

Once appeased, Rudra restores the sacrifice, and the gods establish for him forever a special share in it. It is significant that fear turned into reverent worship: enmity was calmed by acknowledging the right of the Supreme. The verse teaches that the wrath of God is quelled not by resistance but by rendering due honor; and "on their guard even to this day" is a reminder that reverence for the Supreme must be constant, lest the neglect be repeated.
