"Names in the worlds, many here, are explained according to their meaning -- for greatness, for omnipotence, and by deeds. And in the Veda his is proclaimed: the supreme Shatarudriya; and under the name 'Ananta-rudra' -- the worship of the great-souled one. He is the lord of desires, the god of those that are divine and those that are human; he is omnipotent, he is the lord god, he pervades the great universe."

The names of God are not accidental -- they explain his greatness, his omnipotence, and his deeds; and the Veda itself extols him in the Shatarudriya. It is significant that a name here is not a label but a revelation of essence. The verse teaches that naming the Supreme is a way of knowing God: by penetrating the meaning of names, the mind ascends to their Bearer; and the many names of God are not discord but many windows into a single unfathomable fullness.
