एवम् उक्त्वार्जुनं संख्ये पराशरसुतस् तदा ॥
जगाम भरतश्रेष्ठ यथागतम् अरिंदम ॥

[Sanjaya said:] "Having thus spoken to Arjuna in battle, the son of Parashara [Vyasa] then departed, o best of the Bharatas, as he had come, o tamer of foes."

Having uttered the greatest revelation, Vyasa departs "as he had come" -- unnoticed, seeking neither honor nor gratitude. This humility of the sage is significant: he appeared at the needed hour, gave light, and left without attachment to the fruits. The verse closes the Drona-parva on a note of stillness after thunder: the tale of death, vengeance, and terrible weapons ends with the sage's departure and the assurance that with God there is no defeat -- teaching that above the whole wheel of war stands a higher will, in which both victor and vanquished find peace.
