क्रुद्धं तु शक्रं प्रसमीक्ष्य देवः जहास शक्रं च शनैः उदैक्षतkruddhaṃ tu śakraṃ prasamīkṣya devaḥ jahāsa śakraṃ ca śanaiḥ udaikṣatabut, having looked upon the angry Shakra, the god [Shiva] laughed and slowly gazed at Shakra;
संस्तम्भितः अभूत् अथ देवराजः तेन ईक्षितः स्थाणुः इव अवतस्थेsaṃstambhitaḥ abhūt atha devarājaḥ tena īkṣitaḥ sthāṇuḥ iva avatastheand the king of gods then became transfixed: gazed upon by him, he stood still like a pillar;
यदा तु पर्याप्तम् इह अस्य क्रीडया तदा देवीं रुदतीं ताम् उवाचyadā tu paryāptam iha asya krīḍayā tadā devīṃ rudatīṃ tām uvācawhen he had had his fill of the game, then he [Shiva] said to that weeping goddess:
आनीयताम् एषः यतः अहम् आरात् मा एनं दर्पः पुनः अपि आविशेतānīyatām eṣaḥ yataḥ aham ārāt mā enaṃ darpaḥ punaḥ api āviśeta"let him be brought here, for I am not far off; let pride never again enter into him";

Here a single glance of the Lord overthrows the might of the king of gods. It is telling that Shiva does not strike, but only smiles and looks -- and Indra freezes like a pillar: before the Lord all strength is powerless. Here it is shown that the Highest subdues the proud without effort, with a single glance. Thus scripture shows the nothingness of created power before God; and Indra's frozen state is a vivid lesson in humility.
