सः तत् विवृत्य शिखरं महागिरेः तुल्यद्युतीन् चतुरः अन्यान् ददर्शsaḥ tat vivṛtya śikharaṃ mahāgireḥ tulyadyutīn caturaḥ anyān dadarśahe, having opened the peak of the great mountain, saw four others, equal in splendor;
सः तान् अभिप्रेक्ष्य बभूव दुःखितः कच्चित् न अहं भविता वै यथा इमेsaḥ tān abhiprekṣya babhūva duḥkhitaḥ kaccit na ahaṃ bhavitā vai yathā imehaving looked at them, he became sorrowful: "shall I too become like these?"
ततः देवः गिरिशः वज्रपाणिं विवृत्य नेत्रे कुपितः अभ्युवाचtataḥ devaḥ giriśaḥ vajrapāṇiṃ vivṛtya netre kupitaḥ abhyuvācathen the god Girisha [Shiva], opening his eyes, angered, said to the thunder-armed one:
दरीम् एतां प्रविश त्वं शतक्रतो यत् मां बाल्यात् अवमंस्थाः पुरस्तात्darīm etāṃ praviśa tvaṃ śatakrato yat māṃ bālyāt avamaṃsthāḥ purastāt"enter this cave, O Shatakratu, since out of folly you disregarded me before";

Here pride meets its recompense -- confinement among equals. It is telling that Indra sees four former Indras and dreads their fate: his predecessors are a mirror of his own future. Here it is shown that even the lords of the gods are replaceable, and Indra's rank is not eternal possession but a service that changes hands. Thus scripture shows the transience of every position; and the punishment for disregarding the Lord is confinement in the cave.
