And the son of Jarasandha, Sahadeva, the great chariot-warrior, rode out with his people and counselors, placing the family priest before him. Bowing humbly, with many jewels going ahead of him, Sahadeva approached the god among men, Vasudeva. Then Krishna granted safety to him, stricken with fear, and at once anointed the son of Jarasandha as king.

The son of the fallen tyrant comes with humility -- and receives not vengeance but a throne. It is telling that the Lord, who struck down the father for his lawlessness, establishes the humble son on the kingdom: the punishment fell not on the lineage but on the wrongdoing. The granting of "safety" (abhaya) to one stricken with fear is the highest gift the Supreme bestows on one who surrenders; thus it is shown that he is not a destroyer but a protector of those who bow before him. The verse teaches that submission to the Lord turns fear into protection, and an inherited guilt into a new beginning.
