ततो दौःशासनिः क्रुद्धो गदाम् उद्यम्य मारिष ॥
अभिदुद्राव सौभद्रं तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत् ॥
ताव् उद्यतगदौ वीराव् अन्योन्यवधकाङ्क्षिणौ ॥
भ्रातृव्यौ संप्रजह्राते पुरेव त्र्यम्बकान्तकौ ॥
ताव् अन्योन्यं गदाग्राभ्यां संहत्य पतितौ क्षितौ ॥
इन्द्रध्वजाव् इवोत्सृष्टौ रणमध्ये परंतपौ ॥
tato dauḥśāsaniḥ kruddho gadām udyamya māriṣa ||
abhidudrāva saubhadraṃ tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti cābravīt ||
tāv udyatagadau vīrāv anyonyavadhakāṅkṣiṇau ||
bhrātṛvyau saṃprajahrāte pureva tryambakāntakau ||
tāv anyonyaṃ gadāgrābhyāṃ saṃhatya patitau kṣitau ||
indradhvajāv ivotsṛṣṭau raṇamadhye paraṃtapau ||
Then the son of Duhshasana, O worthy one, enraged, having raised his mace, charged at the son of Subhadra crying, "Stand still, stand still!" With maces raised, each seeking the other's death, the two rival heroes clashed as once Tryambaka and Antaka clashed of old. Having struck each other with the heads of their maces, both, scourges of the foe, crashed to the ground in the midst of battle, like Indra's banners cast down.

"Bhrātṛvyau", "cousins" and at the same time "rivals" — the word holds both truths of the Kuru war together: those killing each other were of one blood. The comparison to "Tryambaka and Antaka", Shiva and Yama-the-End, raises the duel to a meeting of two destructive powers. Both fall together, "like Indra's banners cast down" — an image that foretells: whoever rises first will bear away a "victory" won not by valor but by the chance of rising sooner. The verse teaches that in fratricidal slaughter it is not enemies who are destroyed but the very foundation of the clan.
