The ground grew hilly with fallen horses and their blood-drenched riders, struck down by Saubhadra; with elephants bearing goads, drivers, armor, weapons and banners, scattered by arrows like shattered mountains; with warriors without horses or charioteers strewn over the ground; with the finest chariots and their fallen elephants, like foaming backwaters; and with fallen throngs of infantry in all their weapons and adornments. The earth took on a dreadful aspect, striking terror into the faint-hearted.

The inventory turns from splendor to horror: elephants "like shattered mountains," chariots "like foaming backwaters" — elemental images pile up to convey the crushing weight of a slaughter raised by a single youth. "Bhīrūṇāṃ trāsajananī," "birthing terror in the timid," draws a direct line between the faint-hearted, whom the field puts to flight, and the steadfast, who see duty behind it. It is telling that this whole devastation is the work of one alone: the scale of what he wrought shows how treacherously the six who killed him acted. Here the verse teaches that the worth of a sacrifice is sometimes shown most clearly by the mark it leaves behind.
