युद्धे ह्य् आशीविषाकारान् राजपुत्रान् रणे बहून् ॥
पूर्वं निहत्य संग्रामे पश्चाद् आर्जुनिर् अन्वगात् ॥
हत्वा दशसहस्राणि कौसल्यं च महारथम् ॥
कृष्णार्जुनसमः कार्ष्णिः शक्रसद्म गतो ध्रुवम् ॥
रथाश्वनरमातङ्गान् विनिहत्य सहस्रशः ॥
अवितृप्तः स संग्रामाद् अशोच्यः पुण्यकर्मकृत् ॥

pūrvaṃ nihatya saṃgrāme paścād ārjunir anvagāt ||
hatvā daśasahasrāṇi kausalyaṃ ca mahāratham ||
kṛṣṇārjunasamaḥ kārṣṇiḥ śakrasadma gato dhruvam ||
rathāśvanaramātaṅgān vinihatya sahasraśaḥ ||
avitṛptaḥ sa saṃgrāmād aśocyaḥ puṇyakarmakṛt ||
Having first cut down in the fray many princes serpent-like in venom, the son of Arjuna then followed after them. Having slain ten thousand and the maharatha Kausalya, the son of Krishna, like unto Krishna and Arjuna, ascended in truth to the hall of Shakra. Having destroyed chariots, horses, men and elephants by the thousands, not sated with battle, he — author of righteous deeds — is not to be mourned.

"Aśocyaḥ," "not to be mourned," recalls the teaching of the Gita: one who ascends through the fulfillment of duty is not to be grieved for. "Puṇyakarmakṛt," "author of righteous deeds," seals the point: his death is not a loss but a completed sacrifice. "Kṛṣṇārjuna-samaḥ… śakrasadma gataḥ" — equal to Krishna and Arjuna, he ascended to Indra's hall. It is telling that "avitṛptaḥ saṃgrāmāt," "not sated with battle," speaks not of fury but of an unexhausted valor cut short only by lawlessness. The verse teaches us to see in a righteous death not cause for grief but fulfillment.
