क्षमं चेन् मन्यसे युद्धं मम तेनाद्य शाधि माम् ॥
परवान् अस्मि भवति प्रेष्यकृद् रक्ष मे यशः ॥
द्रोण उवाच
सत्यं वदसि कौरव्य दुराधर्षो धनंजयः ॥
अहं तु तत् करिष्यामि यथैनं प्रसहिष्यसि ॥
अद्भुतं चाद्य पश्यन्तु लोके सर्वधनुर्धराः ॥
विषक्तं त्वयि कौन्तेयं वासुदेवस्य पश्यतः ॥
kṣamaṃ cen manyase yuddhaṃ mama tenādya śādhi mām ||
paravān asmi bhavati preṣyakṛd rakṣa me yaśaḥ ||
droṇa uvāca
satyaṃ vadasi kauravya durādharṣo dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
ahaṃ tu tat kariṣyāmi yathainaṃ prasahiṣyasi ||
adbhutaṃ cādya paśyantu loke sarvadhanurdharāḥ ||
viṣaktaṃ tvayi kaunteyaṃ vāsudevasya paśyataḥ ||
[Duryodhana:] "If you think the battle bearable for me, then now instruct me; I am subject to you, your servant carrying out your will -- guard my glory." [Drona:] "You speak the truth, O Kaurava: Dhananjaya is unassailable. But I shall do so that you may withstand him; and let all bowmen in the world today see a wondrous thing -- Kaunteya clinging fast to you, before the eyes of Vasudeva."

Duryodhana's tone softens once more: "paravān asmi... preṣyakṛt" -- "I am subject to you, your servant." From reproach he turns to submission -- such is the nature that swings between pride and need. And Drona, without resentment, promises: "tat kariṣyāmi yathā enaṃ prasahiṣyasi" -- "I shall act so that you can withstand him." It is telling that the teacher answers offense with help. The verse teaches that a true teacher does not repay a pupil's insult with vengeance: he answers arrogance with care; and Drona's gentleness, promising aid to the king who has just wronged him, shows a nobility undiminished by unjust reproach.
