संजय उवाच
शृणुष्वैकमना राजन् यन् मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ॥
द्राव्यमाणे बले तस्मिन् हार्दिक्येन महात्मना ॥
लज्जयावनते चापि प्रहृष्टैश् चैव तावकैः ॥
द्वीपो य आसीत् पाण्डूनाम् अगाधे गाधम् इच्छताम् ॥
श्रुत्वा तु निनदं भीमं तावकानां महाहवे ॥
शैनेयस् त्वरितो राजन् कृतवर्माणम् अभ्ययात् ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
śṛṇuṣvaikamanā rājan yan māṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi ||
drāvyamāṇe bale tasmin hārdikyena mahātmanā ||
lajjayāvanate cāpi prahṛṣṭaiś caiva tāvakaiḥ ||
dvīpo ya āsīt pāṇḍūnām agādhe gādham icchatām ||
śrutvā tu ninadaṃ bhīmaṃ tāvakānāṃ mahāhave ||
śaineyas tvarito rājan kṛtavarmāṇam abhyayāt ||
"Listen, focused, o king, [about] what you ask me. [When] that army was being driven to rout by the son of Hridika, the great soul, and [the Pandava army] drooped from shame while your [warriors] rejoiced — [Kritavarman,] who was an island against the Pandavas seeking a ford in the deep [of battle] — having heard the terrible roar of your [warriors] in the great battle, Shaineya, swiftly, o king, advanced on Kritavarman."

Kritavarman is called "dvīpaḥ," an island in the deep: a stronghold against which the onslaught breaks. But Satyaki, hearing the triumphant roar, at once hastens toward the trouble. It is telling that he hears the cry for help before all else. The verse teaches that the faithful are alert to the distress of their own: hearing that his kinsmen are being overwhelmed, he does not delay, for where the enemy triumphs, a defender is most needed, and a devoted heart rushes to the hardest place.
